The Airport — a world guide

27MEOWPORT

Somewhere between the control tower and the terminal, a jet goes zooming past — and every window has a little face in it. A cat here, a dog there, whole rows of them peeking out like the runway is the best show in town. (It is.) This is the Airport: sunny, busy, and full of planes that never quite stop moving, with a tower keeping watch over the whole happy operation.

Down on the tarmac, the crowd has gathered, and your job is the one we love best: somewhere in all those whiskers is one special critter, and you get to find them. There's no way to lose and nothing hurrying you along — just looking, pointing, and the small, excellent thrill of there they are. Word from the tower says Captain Whiskers and the aviator Amelia Fur-hart are hiding down there too. More on them in a moment, once we've cleared them for landing.

What to look for in the Airport

The Airport keeps three secrets of its own, and all three are the rare, blending-in kind — they don't announce themselves, they just stand there looking casual until a sharp pair of eyes taps them. (The usual wanderers — Cameow Sandiego, Schrödinger's Kit, Penny the Pug, and Mika — can drift through any world, this one included, so don't be surprised.) Here's who belongs to this world and this world only:

Tips for grown-ups

The jets are your conversation starters here. When one zooms past, ask who's peeking out the windows — cat or dog? How many faces before it's gone? This world is also a goldmine of big, satisfying words to practice: runway, terminal, control tower, pilot, take-off. For wigglier moments, arms out — you're both airplanes now — then come in for one smooth landing on the couch. And since all three of this world's treasures are the blend-into-the-crowd kind, make the search slow on purpose: scan the crowd together, row by row. Nobody can lose, so the looking is the game.

One more thing…

Every seat on these jets appears to be a window seat, and every window has a nose pressed against it. Frankly, that's just accurate — has any cat, dog, or small child in history ever chosen the aisle on purpose?
